At the 2011 Addy Awards presented by AAF Reno, Stancan™ Design (aka “Stankin” for one brief evening) took home 15 Addy Awards, including four gold and Best of Show for DesignMatters. The work was commissioned by AIGA Reno/Tahoe for the annual event featuring AIGA medalist, Stephen Frykholm and a local designer chair competition. Bennett Peji Business Card

Here is another one of my favorite business cards, with a contemporary update. The first card I received from Bennett Peji at the HOW Design Conference in 1999. The studio tours that year raided his home. (There was a bit of a misunderstanding.) Imagine 30-40 designers showing up at your front door asking for a tour of your “studio” and the location is your home. Bennett was extremely gracious and calm under the pressure. He really sold me on the idea of being an AIGA member by his example that day.

This card is printed one side, 1C Metallic Silver on FOX River Confetti Midnight something or other (not sure if they still produce it). The special die-cut is memorable and quite a conversation starter.

Peji gave me another business card 10 years later at the AIGA leadership retreat in Portland, OR. This is a great example of keeping true to the original design while adding some new important information.

This card is printed two sided, 1 C Black, letterpress, on Neenah Eames – Weave, Tivoli Green 80lb. cover and finally, manually duplexed. I am super stoked I was able to sleuth this one out! Bennett tell me if I am wrong.

The judging for LogoLounge Volume 7, has been completed with over 36,000 logos up for consideration. Judges included included, Louise Fili of Louise Fili Ltd, Paul Howalt of Tactix Creative, Gyula Nemeth of Gyula Nemeth, Tom Andries of Today, Regine Stefan of Venturethree, Ken Carbone of Carbone Smolan Agency, James Strange of Bailey Lauerman, and Cesar Hirata of FutureBrand BC&H.

The identity we designed for DesignMatters was chosen to be published! Very cool.

Well after holding the pole position for the past decade VSA redesigned their cards. What do you think? I am not positive of the stock, but I believe the first version is on Neenah Classic Crest Epic Black printed letterpress with a silver metallic ink.

AIGA Reno/Tahoe Letter-Pressed Gift Tags

This holiday season, AIGA Reno/Tahoe is going to get some design redemption while helping out our local community. We collaborated with Black Rock Press and Mohawk Paper to design one-of-a-kind gift tags.

Designers from our chapter were paired up by AIGA Reno/Tahoe to design letter pressed gift tags to be sold at “Second Hand Handmade Craft Fair” on December 3 in Reno, NV. But it’s not just for us to show off our design skills, all proceeds from the tags will benefit Northern Nevada Food Bank.

All proceeds will benefit the Northern Nevada Food Bank. Each gift pack comes with 9 different designs featuring the talents of AIGA Reno/Tahoe members.

Hey! DesignMatters inaugural event focuses on the concept of collaboration and the interplay between the various design disciplines. A chair design competition will be held to exhibit the process, creativity, and ingenuity of collaborative design.

Steve Frykholm, Creative Director at Herman Miller, joins DesignMatters as the keynote speaker. Frykholm was recognized as the 2010 AIGA Medalist for establishing the highest standards of corporate design through his work shaping the visual identity and sensibility of American design innovation company Herman Miller for more than 40 years. His work has been published and exhibited around the world; his posters are in the collections ranging from the Museum of Modern Art in New York to the Cooper- Hewitt National Museum of Design to the Library of Congress. He’s won graphic design and communications awards from AIGA, the New York Art Directors Club, American Centerfor Design, Communication Arts, Graphis, and Print. The event will feature a Slide Slam, fast paced and entertaining presentations focusing on the theme of collaboration and curated exhibit of all entries.

We invite all design professionals, their providers, students and anyone interested to participate in the DesignMatters chair design competition. Entries will be showcased at the forum. Attendees of the event will have the opportunity to participate in a chair auction and People’s Choice Award.

DesignMatters celebrates and advocates the value of good design. Well designed objects, images, and spaces have the power to empower an individual, inspire the masses, and enrich a whole community.

Barbie’s card

I “found” this card (probably in 1987) rooting through the “Leave Your Business Card Here for a Free Lunch” bowl. Man, this is a weird and very cool card. After all of these years, I still don’t know exactly what to make of it. Is it a calling card? Is Barbie a lady of the evening? I never had the guts to call the phone number and I have never run across one similar.

It was a very expensive card to produce, at least for an individual. It’s printed on a very fine, soft, heavy cotton sheet with a gold, foil stamped muli-level sculpted die. Barbie is printed offset in a solid red ink (PMS 485?) and the phone number is blue BIC pen.

NOTE: If you left your business card in the Free Lunch bowl in the mid 1980′s at Bailey’s Cafe in Reno, NV and it was pretty cool or interesting, the chances are pretty slim that you won. It is probably in my collection. If it shows up here on our Blog let me know and I will buy you lunch. But Barbie, please, let’s leave it a mystery.
