KUNR Wins German Design Award

Last we checked, the Germans knew a thing or two about good design. In fact, they even have something called the German Design Awards (no, really), of which we are winners!

Our rebrand campaign for KUNR has been awarded a German Design Award for Excellent Communications Design – Brand Identity. The German Design Awards are the international premier prize awarded by the German Design Council.

In our rebrand campaign for KUNR, our goal was to design a modern brand that would take the station into a new world of media distribution. Most of all, we wanted to do it as simply as possible while still maintaining a regional feel.

The brand is anchored by an adaptable “U” that performs a variety of functions. It acts as a frame for content, allowing KUNR to showcase programs, media, and stories across all platforms while also acting as tribute to U (you), the listeners who power public radio.

KUNR was at a real junction,” said Stan Byers, owner and creative director at Stan Can Design. “We wanted them to be able to compete with that next level in the media industry while still staying true to their roots.”

Here’s what the German Design Council judges had to say about the campaign:

“The appearance looks timelessly modern, with the distinctive flat U opening up a variety of interesting possibilities for usage in communications. At the same time, it makes the broadcaster visually recognizable. A remarkably simple design with its own unmistakable identity that also forms a connection to the region.”

Always feels good when peers can see right through to the goals of your concept. You can head to the German Design Awards website to get a glimpse of the competition and other winners. If you didn’t know already, you can head to KUNR.org or tune your radio to 88.7 FM to hear listener-powered news, stories, and shows.
